M: But first David, I think we’re gotta go with The Rover.

D: Well, 10 years after the collapse Outback Australia is a grim, barren place, where outcast of mixed races scrabble to survive in a world where the only curreny accepted is the US dollars. Here desperate ruthless men and women cling to a small venir??? of civilazation. Eric, Guy Pearce, seems when we first see him, to be a tired and beaten man. But when three men steel his car, he becomes obsessed with getting it back. For reasons that are like many elements of the film held back from the audience. While doggedly persuing the men who stole his transportation, Eric reluctantly joins forces with Rey, Robert Pattinson, the injured brother of one of the men.

M: De először David, nézzük a Rovert.

D: Nos, 10 évvel az összeomlás után Ausztrália Isten háta mögötti része egy gyászos és sivár hely, ahol vegyes fajok kirekesztettjei küzdenek a túlélésért és ahol az egyetlen elfogadott pénznem az amerikai dollár. Kétségbeesett és kegyetlen férfiak és nők kapaszkodnak a megmaradt civilizáció darabkájába. Eric, Guy Pearce, egy -  amikor először találkozunk vele -, fáradt és levert embernek tűnik, de amikor három ember ellopja az autóját, megszállottá válik, hogy visszaszerezze azt; olyan okok miatt amiket, mint a filmben sok mást is, visszatartanak a nézőktől. Míg makacsan üldözi az autóját ellopó embereket, Eric kelletlenül magával viszi Rey-t, Robert Pattinsont, az egyik tolvaj testvérévt.

Much was expected of Australian director David Michod after his brilliant, unsettling debut feature, Animal Kingdom. Expectations that have for the most part being met with his second feature. The Rover is a road movie, that inevitably evokes the Mad Max films, because like them it’s set in the desert of an apparently ruined Australia. The new film is also an odd couple movie. With Eric, an apparently decent man, forming a reluctant partnership with the untrustworthy and unpredictable Rey. The film is pretty violent and is structured around a series of suspenseful scenes that are very well handled. Only at the very end does the confrivants of the whole entreprise show through. And by then you’ve either embraced the film for the sheer cinematic smarts it exhibits, or rejected it. Cinematography by Argentina’s Natasha Braier is excellent and among the fine actors to make major contribution are Gillian Jones, as a sinister old woman, Susan Prior, as an isolated doctor, David Field as one of the car thieves, and American Scoot McNairy, who’s Rey’s vicious brother. Margaret, what did you think of The Rover?

Sokat vártak az ausztrál rendezőtől, David Michodtól az első, ragyogó egyben felkavaró filmje, az Animal Kingdom után. Ezek az elvárások a második filmjében nagyrészben teljesültek. A Rover egy road movie, ami elkerülhetetlenül felidézi a Mad Max filmek hangulatát, elvégre azok is a sivatagban játszódtak egy látszólag tönkrement Ausztráliában. Az új film egyben egy furcsa pár filmje is. Egyikük Eric, egy látszólag rendes ember, aki vonakodva ugyan, de társul a megbízhatatlan és kiszámíthatatlan Rey-el. A film elég erőszakos és várakozásokkal teli jelenetek sorozata köré épül, amiket nagyon jól kezeltek. Egyedül a film legvégén kerül bemutatásra az egész vállalkozás. Addigra vagy beleélted magad a hamisítatlan filmszerű fortélyok bemutatásába, vagy elutasítod. Natasha Braier argentín fényképész munkája kiváló, és a jó színészek között olyanok járultak hozzá a filmhez mint Gillian Jones, mint egy vészjósló idős nő, Susan Prior, egy elszigetelt orvos, David Field mint az egyik autótolvaj és Scott McNairy, Rey gonosz bátyja. Margaret, mit gondolsz a Roverről?

M: I think it is spare genre filmmaking. It is really-really well done, I think Robert Pattinson, that role could have gone so easily awry, and I think he handles it fabuously. Guy Pearce is just wonderfully solid as Eric. I think, one of the great thing about this film is the soundscape on it. With music by Antony Partos and --- contributing as well on the sound design, I think it great, I mean it must be enormous pressure on David Michod to come up with a film after Animal Kingdom and he tries to make this one here in Australia, you know, trying to conceive all the future that is possibly real for this country, so there’s social and economic subtext to the film.

M: Szerintem ez egy igazi zsánerfilm (életfilm/művészfilm). Nagyon-nagyon jól csinálták meg, szerintem Robert Pattinson - kinek a szerepe nagyon könnyen kudarcba fulladhatott volna- , szerintem meseszépen oldja meg a feladatot. Guy Pearce gyönyörűen alapos mint Eric. Szerintem az egyik legjobb dolog a filmmel kapcsolatban a zenei világa. A zeneszerző Antony Partos és --- hozzájárulása nagyon jól hangzott, úgy hiszem, hogy David Michod rendezőn elképesztő nyomás lehetett, hogy az Animal Kingdom után előálljon valamivel, ráadásul itt, Ausztráliában, egy olyan jövőt alkotva meg, ami igen is lehetséges ennek az országnak, van benne társadalmi és gazdasági vonal is.

D: I think inevitably after Animal Kingdom which was so good, you feel slightly let down with this. Not greatly, because it’s a beautifully made film

D: Szerintem elkerülhetetlen, hogy az Animal Kingdom után, ami annyira jó volt, ne okozzon ez egy kis csalódást. Nem nagyot, mert gyönyörű film lett

M: It’s so different. He’s being really wise to go ’okay, I’m going out there, filling these rangers, here I come’, I’m giving it four stars.

M: Nagyon különböző. Nagyon bölcs dolgo volt, hogy azt mondta, ’kiállok, hadd jöjjenek,’ szóval én négy csillagot adok a filmnek.

D: Yes, I am too, four stars.

D: Igen, én is, négy csillagot.
